What I need right now!

Today's workouts were, as Rae would say, a doozy. I did a 40 minute interval run and then followed up by a 5 x 5 workout for the upper body which left me begging for a good long stretch. I'm following a program from "New Rules of Lifting" by Alwyn Cosgrove and somebody (his name escapes me) Schuler designed for hypertrophy, using large compound type movements done in superset formation.
Looks like this:
Cable Seated Row paired with Incline DB press
Wide Lat Pull down paired with DB shoulder press (I did these standing because I'm a masochist)
Close Grip Bench press paired with High Pulls (I haven't done these for ages, but I can feel it now in my hamstrings/glutes - probably because I was really focused on initiating movement from there).
Swiss ball crunch.
After hammering those weights I got really hungry in the afternoon and grabbed some extra food. DH cooked chicken breast on the barbecue tonight and we had that with lots and lots of steamed vegetables. Yummo!
Tomorrow I have another date with RPM and a long overdue hair cut. I'm one of those people who hate sitting still in a hair salon for hours on end. Just about drives me bananas. A sports massage - could stay all day!

Good quote for the day!

"It is not how much you do, but how much love you put in the doing."

I love this quote - if you live with passion, as Kimmy (from Blogland) suggests, life is so much more fulfilling.

I've enjoyed a well deserved rest day - I knew as soon as I rolled out of bed this morning that some down time was needed, so I've spent the day writing programs, sending emails and paying bills.

Tomorrow I have the panel interview that was deferred from last week and I have to work out how I am going to fit in live personal training, my own training and all the online work I am doing. The last thing I want is to spread myself too thin. My game plan is to work Tuesday through to Saturday and take Sunday/Monday off. From next week I am teaching RPM on Monday mornings at Toowong, but it's still going to be a nice cruisey admin day.

What else? Time to race off and cook dinner - it's gotta come from somewhere and as I've mentioned before, I'm not as much of a planner as I should be when it comes to dinners etc.

Weekly Wrap Up

I can't believe it, I've trained seven days in a row this week. Time for some well earned recovery this week. I've taught four RPM classes, a Bodystep, done two runs and 3 strength training sessions. Apart from some hamstring DOMS that I keep telling everyone about, I'm feeling pretty good right now.
My eating has been pretty good too - lots of vegetables, lean protein and plenty of water. I did make the mistake of letting myself get too hungry yesterday though - I came home and wolfed down a peanut butter sandwich before I realised what I was doing. Rather than beat myself up for eating "off the plan", it is simply a case of "plan ahead next time and just keep going!". My relationship with food has completely changed - it used to be "I've blown it and I'm a failure"(and keep on overdoing it some more) - now it is more about being more intuitive - "how am I feeling? What does my body need?" Gosh that salad looks delicious...mmmm". It's only taken me a few good years to get to this point where I can say now that I truly "walk the walk" as well as "talk the talk".
This week I'm rejigging my training and starting an Alwyn Cosgrove Hypertrophy Program. Miss G is begging me to take her to the gym tomorrow. I would rather have a day off, but I will see what happens in the morning. Tuesday could be an even better rest day - meet up with DH for lunch in the city and swan around Borders for a few hours :) What could be nicer?

I've been tagged!

Each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to write on their own blog about their seven things, as well as these rules. You need to choose 7 people to get tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them that they have been tagged and to read your blog!

1) I am obsessed about cleanliness of my bed linen and only like 100% cotton sheets.

2) Sunday just isn't Sunday without slopping around and reading both the Brisbane and Sydney papers.

3) I've had some interesting jobs - deveining prawns for a Japanese restaurant, stacking shelves at Woollies and doing one letterbox drop (there is no money in that) after I had Miss S - I thought that I would get more exercise. The only exercise it was - one of frustration!

4) I do what I love and love what I do.

5) I married my high school sweetheart too. I dated him in high school, disappeared for 8 or 9 years and took up where we left off. Not really. It was a little more complicated than that - we've been married 11 years in August.

6) I love cooking and trying out all sorts of new recipes. However I cannot sew to save my life.

7) My ultimate dream is to be able to retire early and indulge in lots of world travel, sounds pretty good huh?

OK, I'm tagging

Food for thought!

"The diet industry is the only industry that I know that makes a profit out of its product failing"

I have decided to go "green" today and see how it comes up on my blue background. Hope you all can read it.

I've had another busy day - firstly I taught RPM over at Mount Gravatt. The participants were very friendly, but the club had a completely different vibe to that of Toowong and Indro. The weirdest thing was having to catch the lift to the Cycle Studio although I was informed later on that there are stairs in the building.

I then enjoyed having a look at the Garden City Shopping Complex and bought the girls some clothes from KMart and Pumpkin Patch. It is much easier shopping without them. Last time Miss G got her eye on a dress and refused to take it off. I walked out of Pumpkin Patch $40.00 lighter that day, though I must say she has worn said dress an awful lot. I also got to visit Borders and would have counted more than 100 books on the shelves related to dieting. That is scary!

I am looking forward to a busy weekend - I'm hitting the weights tomorrow and teaching RPM again on Sunday. I think my hamstrings will thank me for my planned rest day on Monday. Did I mention I like teaching RPM? :)

Training the pretty little muscles!

Today I trained what I call the "pretty little muscles" - biceps and triceps - with me doing so many compound moves these days, it's probably not really all that necessary to train them! However I have April in my mind as the next time I compete and I'm throwing in these exercises for that reason. Many of the exercises bodybuilders do aren't dreadfully functional (and this includes some of the training I do when I am prepping) and I am at the moment really enjoying getting back to basics with squats, deadlifts, pull ups and the like. I am planning two more break in workouts and then I'm going to work on both pure strength and hypertrophy for 12-16 weeks.

Cardio wise, I am having the time of my life teaching RPM and Bodystep! I have been monitoring my heart rate with my F11 and I found myself almost fully recovered early into Track 4 and today I went for a run and was running under 5 and a half minute ks at only 70% max. Which makes me think that the old gal still has some speed left in her1 I am sure I have mentioned it before but I would love to beat my best 5k time of 21.25 again. I haven't been anywhere near that for years! Decisions, decisions! I could, of course wake up in a few weeks and run the Gold Coast Half Marathon - will have to see what everyone is up to. It wouldn't be my best running effort, but the social part would make up for that!

Quick Training Update

I'm going to be pretty boring with a quick training update.
Today: RPM 45 mins, strength training 30 mins (squats, dumbbell rows, split squats, push ups and swiss ball crunches).
Still lots of paperwork to get through, but I'm getting there :)

For Mikey

Hi Liz,I came across your blog looking for trainin... Hi Liz,I came across your blog looking for training tips. I'm a mountain climber and cyclist so I stick to DVDs like The Tri-Athlete (which I love) but I am always looking for new training methods and ideas. It might be time to check out Cathe Friedrich. Any other suggestions?

Dear Mikey, I accidentally "rejected" your comment, so I've copied and pasted it. If you are into cycling I would suggest that you check out Coach Troy and his Spinervals workouts. They are excellent - you can use a stationary bike or bike trainer with these really well. The address is www.spinervals.com . The other person you can check out is Chris Carmichael. I haven't seen any of his DVDs but believe they are very good.

Catching a wave!

Busy, busy, busy today - firstly taught Bodystep which was a lot of fun this morning. Then it was onto the New Rules of Lifting Workout B which is focused on compound exercises - more bang for your buck. I was pleased to increase the weight used in my deadlift and close grip pulldown and the whole exercise didn't seem nearly as painful as last week.

My panel interview was deferred until next week. This is fine by me as I am still adjusting to moving in properly. My DH tells me that judging by the untidy state of the house that I'm the happiest I have been for a long time.

He's right of course - I am most definitely riding a positive energy wave and life is good!

Riding the RPM train again!

I have just spent the weekend launching RPM and Bodystep. It was so much fun to team teach with other instructors and we had this wacky 70s/early 80s theme going. I knew that I had it right when DH asked me if I was going out "dressed like that". It's when your husband turns into your mother, you know you have made some impression! After a weekend of lots of launches, we all treated ourselves to Indian food which was just delicious. I got the expected carb bloat this morning though, but that was OK, it gave me the chance to really cane it today.

I really enjoy this new RPM release, particularly the Track 5 with the 2 minute time trial and I got to teach it again this morning. Bodystep tomorrow, some weights, a lunchtime meeting and panel interview tomorrow. It's going to be a busy one!

It has been raining here today and I have been catching up on some admin. I don't even mind that I still have piles of washing to do from last week - I would much rather see the rain than worry whether my washing will dry or not. Bring it on!

Media tart!

Yes, my mug is in Women's Health and Fitness Magazine again this month. I haven't seen the article yet, but my good mate Kek and myself feature in the "Active at Any Age" article. I am rather chuffed as I have never been in a magazine before, apart from this month and last month's effort.

It's been a really busy week so far learning all the choreography for the Les Mills programs and getting back on the bike. I bought a gorgeous pair of Shimano SPD shoes which are just awesome to ride with and I've cranked out two intense weight training sessions as well. My abs are so sore that it hurts to laugh.

What else, I have been approached by Fitness First at Indooroopilly and Toowong to work as a Franchised Personal Trainer. I'm leaning towards Indro at the moment as it is closer to home and there is only one other female trainer on staff. Plus I have all of my online clients to look after as well.

After being so bored in Woop Woop for so long, it's sooo nice to be busy!

Life's Little Hiccups

I watched my life fall off a truck on Thursday morning! Yes, you read right, the removalists dropped my computer from a height of 3 metres, which is delaying my return to normality somewhat as I wait on a replacement. Actually, much of our furniture was badly damaged in this move, so much so that the removalists are now called "Allied Prickfords" in our household - and the catch tag "the careful movers" has to be the most inaccurate known to man. Arrggh.

Despite these setbacks, life is pretty good. I went to RPM High Performance this morning and I am already feeling the DOMS starting to settle in. I decided not to do any weights until I'm fully unpacked - I keep joking that I'm worried about getting too sore.

Hope to be back more permanently soon.

The World is my Oyster!

Well here I am, back in Blogland at least, but still no email access for a few days. Sooo if anyone has trying to contact me, you will probably hear from me shortly.

It is so wonderful to be back. After two solid days of packing up, cleaning etc we spent our last night at the Woop Woop Coal and Cattle Hotel. We had a memorable last meal to say the least. DH ordered garlic bread which turned up charred, then his chicken was so overcooked, we could have sworn we could have used it as a grenade substitution through the pub window. Meanwhile , my chicken salad was raw! As there is nowhere else to eat out in Woop Woop the four of us went to bed hungry with memories of a bad meal that will last a lifetime!

We've been staying in serviced apartments in the city and have been dining out 24/7 and enjoying fresh (sigh!) veggies, fruit and the like. We've also both been out running, lifting weights and going to the movies. We officially move into our house on Thursday and the girls started kindy and school today. I have to go and do various bits and pieces such as changing addresses, electoral enrolment etc. I even squeezed in a workout this morning. Going to the gym was extremely decadent!! I ran on the treadmill for 20 mins and used the elliptical for 20 mins (am taking it easy to begin with) and had a good stretch.

Life is good!

Running and RPMing

Whew!

Just got home from Brisbane and we are packing the place up tomorrow and uplifting on Friday, which means we'll be home on Saturday. We have to wait until next Thursday for the movers to unpack at the new rental property though. It works out well in a way - I can learn all my Les Mills choreo whilst I'm waiting to move in. For the first launch in ages, I'll actually be getting to practice with other people.

It was lovely to see everyone and I got to do Ruthie Teina's RPM class. She is a phenomenal athlete and teacher and I just sat there absorbing it all, that is when my legs weren't screaming for mercy. Today I backed up and did John's RPM class this morning. I have DOMS up to ying yang, I had pasta for dinner, but I'm very happy.

Off to bed now - big day tomorrow - will see you all in a week and a bit ;)

Girl gets nothing done!

Agggh, today I am wondering why I named my blog "Girlgetsitdone" because it feels like over the past day or two I have done nothing at all.

On Friday I came down with a heavy cold and yesterday I suffered a cracker of a migraine. I've been relatively migraine free this year but this was a doozy. Today I have nursed a post migrainous sore head and continued to work through this cold.

DH decided to take us out for lunch at the local pub. I think I had the worst steak I've ever encountered in my life and when I asked for steamed vegetables on the side, the waitress told me that they'd never been asked for vegetables before and that they didn't have any. Oh well, small changes add up :)

So now I'm feeling headachey, fat, sinusey and altogether of unpleasant disposition. I'd sure be a hot date :)

On a much brighter note I am looking forward to hearing about how Di, Alicia, Deb and Tracey rock the INBA show in Brisbane today...you go girls!

Moving at the speed of light.

Now you see me....

Now you don't!

Just had the news we may be being packed up early as next Thursday.

Stay tuned :)

Okaaaaayyyyy ...here's one for Rae!

I read on an American health and fitness forum about the release of "Diet Coke Plus" which is fortified with vitamins and minerals.

According to the nutritional label, Diet Coke Plus includes 25% of the recommended daily allowance of niacin (vitamin B3), vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 as well as 15% of the RDA for magnesium and zinc in each 12-ounce serving. It is sweetened with an aspartame/ACE-K blend that has become the industry norm for just about every diet drink nowadays.Attempting to get a leg up on their primary competition--Pepsi-Cola North America--as that company is set to release their own diet "energy" drink called Diet Pepsi MAX in June 2007, Coca-Cola North America is seeking to provide their loyal consumer base with a diet soda product that will serve as a supplement to their healthy diet, according to Coke's senior VP Katie Bayne.“Consumers, including Diet Coke drinkers, are increasingly looking for more beverage options, and we wanted to offer them the convenience of a calorie-free beverage that is a good source of several essential vitamins and minerals, and one that delivers on the great taste that they have come to expect from us,” she said.

All I can say folks, be very afraid, very afraid :)

Eeewwww.

Smacked it!

I did Cathe's Cardio Fusion this morning which is a delightful blend of Bodymax 2, Drill Max and Low Impact circuit. - my heart rate got as high as 166 this morning and I pushed it as hard as I could. I think this is one of Cathe's best compilations. I also managed a walk this morning.

I've spent the better part of today writing programs and doing assessments. I'm enjoying it very much. I really enjoy being able to give feedback and encouragement and I love watching people "transforming". I just wish that I had done it sooner.

I am really starting to get excited about moving back home. I fly to Brisbane on Monday to find some rental accommodation. I hope we find something quickly. That will mean I can sneak in a few RPM classes if I'm lucky!

Stop the press!

Kerryn ( www.keksbflthing.blogspot.com ) and I are in print this month, sharing our philosophy about stick thin models and the BMI. Check us out on page 56 of Women's Health and Fitness, which is out at all good newsagents now :)

What fun!

I hope everyone has a great Anzac Day. I think it is wonderful that we celebrate this day and remember all of those who fought for our wonderful country.

Flat out!

Arrrgh I always feel like I get super busy when I move - it's like a big truck starting to rumble slowly downhill. You get on the slope and it's like...whoa! Things are moving fast. I love this expression, even though I don't drink as such. I'm putting it in for Lesley, because it is so hilariously Aussie.

I am experiencing super DOMS again from Cathe's Chest and Tricep workout and this morning I tried the original Bodymax workout from the late 90s. I had heard that it is harder than Body max 2. It took awhile to get going but once it did, it was awesome. Despite being filmed some time ago, it's aged fairly gracefully. It is amazing how workout fashions change! It's also proof positive how you get better as you get older in the muscularity department. Don't get me wrong, Cathe looks great, but I think she looks even better these days! That's why I admire all the Master's women who compete - they are most definitely my favourite division. Not long to go until I'm in that category!

I also got in an hour's walk this morning, which was great to clear my mind. Usually I learn my Les Mills choreo when I go on these walks and because we are due for launches as soon as I get back, I'm going to keep walking! I'm hoping to squeeze in some back and shoulder work this afternoon.

Thanks for all the lovely comments about my little "diet" rant. The more I work with people, the more it's becoming obvious to me how destructive the whole scenario can be and I want to be a good role model for everyone I come into contact with.

"Love with Limits"

Caution: "Dieting" rant ahead!

Rae wrote a terrific post last week about her take on the Figure lifestyle and I am often asked what makes my preparation different and what my approach to eating is, what do I eat and how often do I eat?
For a start, I hate the word "diet" with a passion. "Diet" to me conjures up images of restriction, boredom, guilt and displeasure. Eating the same thing day in day out because that is what you've been told to eat by your "trainer" is a "diet". Living by rules such as no carbs after 3pm constitutes the "diet" mentality. Pretty stupid really if you train at night. No eating after 7pm - not really practical if you're a shift worker and you don't go to bed until midnight.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that "dieters" make up these rules that make no scientific sense and try to create an artificial set of parameters by which to live by. Sorry kids, but that sort of behaviour comes back to bite you on the butt. Why, because after awhile you can feel both emotionally and physically deprived.
It has been shown in many studies that people who diet tend to lose their innate ability to naturally regulate their food intake - this is called "counter regulation".
In order to be successful and stay lean in the long term it is important to recognize that
1) All foods are morally neutral. There is no such thing as "naughty food", except maybe for Rae's Meat Pie Pizza (only because it looks terrible). You can choose to eat it IF you want it, but do you really feel like it?
2) You will be more hungry on some days and less hungry on others and this fluctuates with your menstrual cycle (if you're a woman). Better to apply the 200 calorie, not 2000 calorie rule and have a little extra. Your body just may be trying to tell you something.
3) It is natural to overeat on occasion - the food looks good or it's a celebration or you're stressed out, tired etc. It's happened before and it will happen again ...guaranteed. Knowing this reduces the appeal of a "binge".
What does this mean for someone wanting to become lean for life? It doesn't mean running around stuffing yourself with abandon or scarfing down every junk food known to man. It means following a few nutritional basics and listening to your body - enjoying a nice restaurant meal every now and again without wondering what the macronutrient breakdown is and enjoying what you eat. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and lean sources of protein. I love spice and lots of flavour. I try new recipes all the time, even during comp prep and I keep my palate happy! Every now and again I have a nice dessert. The "secret" is all about balance.
For example I've tried two new recipes in the past three days. One was red curry chicken burgers with salad and baby potatoes. (red curry paste, onions, egg, breadcrumbs, chicken breast mince) and tonight I'm trying a beef stirfry with baby corn, snow peas, purple cabbage and red capsicum, plenty of ginger and garlic too. Nothing like a bit of colour to brighten your day.
My other thought of the day: Enjoy the journey - sure the end is the icing on the cake, but all the training in between is an awful lot of fun.

You know you are moving when...

You know you are moving when you are trying to get rid of everything in the fridge! I believe it's a common phenomenon to have lots of bottles of various bits and pieces in the fridge, a quarter full - not enough to throw away, but a quantity that might be "useful". DH asked me what was for dinner today. According to what is left in the fridge he is looking at artichokes and dill pickles on toast with tandoori paste, followed by an anchovy and mustard pickle chaser. It was little wonder then he mumbled some excuse about being late and not being around for dinner...
Exercise wise, I got up early and went for a walk and now I'm going to do my beloved RPM and Cathe's Gym Style Chest and Triceps.
It's going to be a huggggeee week!

Weekend duties

Not much to report in terms of training today. Time for a rest day - think I needed it. Tomorrow I'll hit it hard again. I worked this morning at the pharmacy and at home this afternoon. I'm tired, but happy! Now if only I had my own personal maid to sort out the laundry...lol

Best of luck girls!

To Deb, Alicia and Tracey,

Hope you really enjoy the Female Fusion Contest tomorrow! I'm cheering you on from Woop Woop!

Liz ;)

The best type of dinner

This is an example of what I call "the best type of dinner". Why? Because it takes 10 minutes to prepare and is full of veggies and lean protein. Who said you have to slave for hours to eat well (though if anyone's offering, I'm up for it!).

This was simply 100g cooked chicken breast, 1 tablespoon of honey soy marinade, 1/2 large packet stir fry vegetables, 40g glass noodles and a sprinkle of almonds on top. Absolutely delicious! It is really wonderful when you find such easy ways of preparing food that not only tastes good, but is good for you and you don't have to think too hard.

Today I've been really busy with new client's programs, questionnaires and so forth. I have been overwhelmed by the positive response to the site and want to thank everyone for their support.

If anyone missed it, the site is www.thefitnesssolution.com.au

Have a wonderful weekend.

Fun with the kids

First photo is of Miss S's "Crazy Hair Day". I am seriously dreadful at doing hair, which explains why I keep mine so short, but I was really proud of my efforts.

Second photo was taken by Miss S making me and Miss G "cry". I don't know how successful that was but the girls thought this photo was hilarious.

Miss S helped me work out with Cathe the other day. She was using the resistance band and suddenly she stopped and asked me very seriously, "is crying during this workout an option, Mum?". My resistance band nearly ended up over on the other side of the lounge room.

She is turning from my baby into a proper little girl. She was discussing her friend situation at school, how Friend A was no longer mates with Friend B... "They're not friends anymore, it's a break up, OK?"

I had trouble trying not to laugh!

This morning I went for a 50min walk and did 3/4 of Hardcore Extreme: Hi - Low Intervals. It's amazing that even the low impact blasts get my heart rate into the 160s. My latest game is trying to touch the roof on all the jumps :)

Where I'm at training wise

A few people have asked me where I'm at training wise. At the moment, I'm simply having a lot of fun with my training. I've been spending a fair bit of time building my aerobic base cycling as I will be placing a lot of demand on it teaching RPM when I get back home. When I'm up there on stage I really try and give each class my all, so my participants can see what level they need to work towards and so I also have the energy to coach the class and focus on them, rather than worrying that I'm going to run out of gas.
As I have had no access to a gym, I've been keeping my muscles active with DVDs from Cathe and Amy Bento. I often add my own twists in, like a BOSU, balance disc or medicine ball to increase the intensity and to keep my muscles guessing. I've really been enjoying doing these workouts and both Cathe and Amy are very encouraging and motivating.
I have also been getting my heart rate up with some running and some step.
The "down time" I've had has been really restorative to me. I would like to add some more muscle but will wait until life smooths out for me after the move...and then who knows?

Question and Answers Part Deux

Hann writes: How much training do you need to do to lose weight?
My take on it:
That depends on a number of different variables. The aim of the game is to lose body fat and for most of us, but not all, there is usually a corresponding decrease in scale weight.
1. What your nutrition and caloric intake looks like. In the simplest of terms, if you eat crap, you look like crap! This does not mean you must forgo "sometimes" foods for the rest of your life but you do have to put it into perspective and realize that "sometimes" really means just that. I'm asked, how many calories do I need to consume to lose weight? That really depends also. I'd prefer to see someone being very active and consuming more rather than going the starvation route. If body fat loss is your goal, aim for no more than half a kilo (or a pound for my American friends) per week loss.
2. Your level of fitness to begin with. Fit bodies utilize fat better than unfit bodies (see post below)
3. How hard you train. You need to train hard enough so that your muscles really do need to recover. There is a high metabolic cost associated with recovery. In every day terms, when you train, you need to do it with intention, and at a level congruent with your current fitness levels etc. You should be looking for progression and improvement every few training sessions.
4. What type of training you do. Neglect strength training at your peril! Most women seem to do best with a 60: 40 cardio/strength training split. Strength training raises your metabolism if you add lean muscle to your frame and there is a high metabolic cost in recovering from hard sessions. Again, when you train, do it with intention! You "become" how you train, so don't faff around!
5. In terms of how long, this depends on your goals. Endurance athletes obviously need to train with longer distances in mind. If body fat loss is your goal, you are best off thinking about quality over quantity. A 30 minute focused workout is better than 60 minutes of wandering around the gym.
Let me know if that sheds any light.

"I train like a girl" Figure fashionistas unite!

I discovered these great tees on Mary Bell's ( a WNBF Figure Pro) site and decided that I am going to purchase one of these. Mary is actually donating the proceeds of the sale of these T Shirts to a charity in the US to prevent the abuse of children. The sizes run small, medium and large and I emailed Mary about the fit of these - she thinks they run pretty true to size. She's 5'8, 147 pounds and wears a medium. The cost is 20.00 US dollars + shipping. I just thought I would put it out there in case anyone else might be interested. That way we save on shipping to Australia. I think it would be a great addition to our "chicken or chocolate" TShirts. If you want a shirt, email me at liz@thefitnesssolution.com.au They also come in grey.

Clouds are Parting!

Clouds are parting, Miss G is feeling so much better, even though I had a "midnight visit" from her. I just did not have the energy to put her back into her own bed. She's usually pretty good about staying in her bed, but when she is sick then I have the pleasure of being kicked in the kidneys for a few days (ie she sleeps with DH and I). I am so relieved she is feeling better.
This meant I have got some workouts into today. Firstly it was Bodymax2 - the "Scrambled Eggs" premix. I absolutely love this premix - it is a step combination - cardio segment, followed by a cardio blast bringing the heart rate up towards anaerobic threshold , then a lower body blast with a variety of weights. My max HR for the workout was 166 and the average for the whole 80 minutes was 150. Who says you can't work hard with a Fitness DVD? Bodymax 2 also has a heavy upper body weights segment (as seen above) which I haven't used (I've just been pasting my lower body )
Then it was 40 minutes of the most intense back and shoulder training I could muster!
Rest of the day looks as if it is going to be busy, busy busy with paperwork and cleaning. Ugh!

Question and Answers

I received an email from a reader asking me about high intensity interval training (HIIT) and its effectiveness in fat loss.

"The question I would like to ask is why you feel HIIT or interval training is more effective than steady training as you are probably burning more calories in say 50 mins of steady running opposed to 30 mins of the previous running?"

Here is my reply:
"To answer your question, it depends on what your goals are. If it is loss of body fat, you are best approaching it like this:

1) build an aerobic base to prepare your muscles for the demands of heavier training
2) As well as some base training, incorporate some high intensity interval training into your workouts. As well as using nearly the same amount of calories, it is what happens AFTER these workouts that is more important. There is a phenomenon called EPOC (Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption) that occurs which keeps our metabolisms running higher for a few hours afterwards depending on the intensity. Also interval training raises anaerobic threshold, the point where the body stops relying on the aerobic energy system (which uses oxygen) and starts relying on the anaerobic energy system. Put simply, go too much past this point and you simply run out of gas.
Raising anaerobic threshold does two things - gives you a greater heart rate range in which you can work out hard (and thus use more calories) and b) causes changes in our muscles at a metabolic level which encourages our bodies to utilize fat (converted into carbohydrate) during rest and whilst exercising. An unfit individual simply doesn't do this.

I hope this doesn't sound too simplistic, but it is really what happens when we are recovering with both strength training and aerobic exercise that makes a difference.

Hope that sheds some light on the subject."

To sum up, especially in endurance sports (my correspondent is a keen runner), both forms of training have their place in the "big" picture.

Dance of Joy!

Ooh yeah baby, I am doing the dance of joy because the relocation process is starting to creak into motion. I am so happy to be going home! I have learnt a lot from being out here, what drives me, what makes me happy and how to be innovative!

Poor Miss G is still unwell. Despite this I managed to sneak off and do Cathe Gym Styles Chest and Triceps - the DOMS I complained about last week lasted until Saturday, so it feels like my triceps have only had a day of respite! I also got in 45 minutes of Spinervals Aero base builder on the bike.

Speaking of aerobic work, I am noticing from many proponents of losing fat fast that there is no place for long slow aerobic work, HIIT is the "way to go". I don't think these people are looking at the value of aerobic training to condition and prepare the musculoskeletal system for hard work. Would I recommend HIIT to a rank beginner who was desperate to lose body fat? Probably not, a) I don't want the client injured and b) I want the client to work up to what hard work should feel like. Everything is based on a continuum of progression, not what the "flavour of the day is". That said, the power of interval training can be profound and is maximized by beginning with a good aerobic base.

I could philosophize all day, but I promised the girls we would make muffins. Miss S loves "cooking" and she will happily chop up vegetables, fruit and all sorts of things as well as make the sweet stuff. I could see her being a chef one day!

Rolling with the punches

It's been one of those weekends where life just hasn't fallen into place the way that I would have liked. It started on Friday when I picked up my car from the mechanic's - I drove it home no problems, but when I pulled into the driveway it made this horrible grinding sound - then all of a sudden I couldn't get it into gear - apparently the part they replaced for me originally disintegrated - I have never heard of something like this happening before! DH told me that apparently they weren't "well regarded" in the town. I'm just the biggest sucker. Anyway, they towed the car away and promised to deliver it home on Saturday. This, of course, didn't happen. I didn't stress about it too much but Miss G has been unwell. I decided to check out her throat and met possibly the worst case of tonsillitis I have ever seen. We had no sleep last night.

Then I decided to call the local hospital to try and get some antibiotics for Miss G. I came down at the time they requested and I met a very frazzled lady in the car park. She was the locum doctor who had been flown in. I introduced myself as the locum pharmacist and she told me that she was majorly stressed out because she had to deliver a premature baby, that they'd had to get the Royal Flying Doctors in to airlift Mum and bub to Brisbane and that her background was not in Obstetrics, rather she is an oncology registrar. I felt so sorry for her and feel angry that resident doctors are sent out to these postings, having to handle these situations to the best of their experience which can be limited depending on where they are in their grad rotations. She was such a nice lady and I hope everyone got away safe and sound. Anyway I organized some penicillin for Miss G, rang the pharmacist owner at home and have started her on it. One of her tonsils is so large it is almost taking up her entire throat! It looks like a day of icecream for her.

Exercise wise for me it has been close to nada. I walked the long way to work yesterday (40 minutes) but have done nothing today. I couldn't think about getting up at 5.30am when I had finally got Miss G off at 4.30am. I love being organized and hate these little glitches - but that is all part of life. The main thing is that I no longer raid the fridge for solace.

Almost Up and Running!

Thanks to everyone for the support for my business venture. I cannot tell you how positive everyone has been and very encouraging. It's a big risk for me!

Anyway, the site is www.thefitnesssolution.com.au and I can process orders straightaway, for those who want to give Cathe et. al a go. I still have to iron out a few kinks, but I am getting there.

Day off!

Scheduled rest day! Rest and recreation, right? Not running around after two kids, though I'm glad I pencilled in a day off in the middle of the week so I can devote more time to them. We've been swimming, done craft, baking (ugh!!) and right now I'm letting them watch ABC Kids.
I've spent the day catching up on all sorts of bits and pieces and have been working on the website, trying to convey my vision without sounding like I have verbal diarrhoea. It's a real gift to be succinct and meaningful at the same time.

It's Coming, it's coming!

Lots of good things are coming my way in the next few weeks.

Firstly, my move back to Brisbane!

Secondly, I have nearly finished building my own website. I have decided to import high quality advanced fitness DVDs into Australia, including Cathe Friedrich. As far as I am aware, I am the sole Australian distributor for her product. I "met" Cathe online in her Pregnancy forum when we were both pregnant with our second children five years ago. I bought her "Intensity Series" back in 2002 and was so impressed with the quality and versatility of the workouts, I have never looked back. I used the DVDs post partum for those times when I couldn't go to the gym and over the years I have used a lot of Cathe's lower body DVDs in my Figure Prep for my leg training. The weight training DVDs have been excellent to use whilst I don't have any gym access and very effective. I am hoping to have the site operational by the end of the week and I will post details here.

I will also be offering online training and lifestyle coaching, including preparation for sporting events such as marathon, triathlon, cycling events and of course Figure conditioning and preparation.

I'm quite excited to be starting this project. I know I have mentioned a while back my desire to be involved more in the coaching and preparation side of things, rather than competing and this is the perfect platform for me.

Today's workout was a 65 minute walk and Cathe's LowMax. This is a low impact high intensity step workout with leg drills. I used the leg drills (blasts) when training my legs for the Qld Titles last year.

Anyway I must go and get ready for lunch, the girls are having their friends around and I have to go and make some sandwiches. Later!

Holy DOMS, Batman!

Oh dear, I have one of the most severe cases of DOMS I've experienced in a long time. Firstly I did Cathe's "Legs and Glutes" on Sunday, followed by Cathe's "Gym Style: Chest and Triceps" yesterday and "Gym Styles: Back, Shoulders, Biceps" today. The Gym Style DVDs are similar to a regular weight training regime - eg 3 sets of 12-16 reps at varying speeds for each set. I think it's the volume that did me in, not to mention the shorter than usual rest periods.

The DOMS in my legs meant that a run was out of the question, so I did a 60 minute walk and one set of Spinervals Aerobase builder (4 sets of 5 min efforts) on the bike. Fitting all of this activity around the kids being on school holidays is not the easiest! I am having a friend over for lunch tomorrow and her three girls are coming too. My girls will think this is the greatest. There is not much to do for entertainment in Woop Woop, but I'm feeling cheered by the prospect that a moving date is approaching!

In other weekend activities I finally managed to see "Borat" - funny, yet scary :) and "Kenny" - the award winning film about a Port-a-Loo cleaner which was surprisingly good.

Legs and Glutes

Oh, yowsa indeedy! Easter Sunday has seen me tackle Cathe's Legs and Glutes and my glutes were absolutely screaming! I added a run to this as well. I don't use a lot of weight, rather I focus on the actual movement, being as precise as possible. It is amazing how effective you can be training your lower body without using a lot of equipment or heavy weights. Though they have their place of course.
Yesterday I did RPM 28 and had a nice long walk and the combination of these two workouts is giving me a nice steady progression of DOMS.
Today's pic is of Amy Bento's All Pump Extreme which is hitting my mailbox any day now. Amy has an amazing number of "premixes" in her workouts, which means I am getting 6 or 7 different workouts for my $ which is good value. I have "met" Amy via phone and she radiates real energy when she talks about her filming projects. It is amazing what workouts are out there when you dig around enough.
I have enjoyed a couple of solid Easter Eggs with DH and the girls. I think if I hadn't indulged I would have some huge "sense of entitlement" feelings happening. Now I have had my chocolate fix and feel happily satisfied.
I hope everyone has a safe and blessed Easter!

The Birds

I went running with about 300 cockatoos this morning. I don't know why this is happening, but huge groups of cockatoos are congregating around Woop Woop and are making an unholy racket. They have only been around for a week or so but it is quite disconcerting running along and having them flying around you squawking madly. Plus there is the poo factor. I have missed that so far, but you never know, that is a hazard of running outside.

I also did Cathe's Push Pull Upper Body Premix this morning. This is an awesome workout. I increased a lot of the weights this morning and actually dropped out some of the reps for something a little bit different. I swear that Cathe is obsessed by biceps and triceps. Mine are on fire every time and I'm pleased to say I did three sets of inverted pike shoulder presses no problem today.

Yesterday was a rest day however. I woke up with a really sore throat and decided it would be prudent to take a day off. Today I am feeling much better. I am amazed at how quickly I recovered as I was feeling totally lousy yesterday! I also did my Polar Fitness Test this morning, returning a VO2max (note this is not a true value - if you've ever done a proper VO2 max in a lab you will understand why!) of 57ml/kg/min! My lab tested value was 47ml/kg/min - but that was ten years ago when I had access to doing these things. However, it is higher than my last reading under similar conditions so I am confident that I have improved.

Whew, this is a long post for Good Friday. No meat today - instead we are having salmon. I think times have changed where fish is more of a delicacy these days than most meat. Hardly a sacrifice.

I could eat....

the a*se out of a rhino today!

Probably due to smashing the bike for 90 minutes today - all in my aerobic endurance zone ;) This is why I try do the minimum amount of cardio to achieve results when I'm in Figure Action. I'm pretty sure I'm glycogen depleted as all I've been craving today is carbs and lots of them. That's why I'm having apple and raspberry crisp for my weekly splurge meal tonight. Lots of oats and the sweetness of apples and icecream! Mmmmm, maybe I should have been a food writer!

It's been a pretty busy day with DH home frantically trying to finish his Stellenbosch assignment. I've been providing the necessary spousal support to get through the pain eg lunches, drinks etc.

I think I am looking forward to his assignments being over more than he is!

sandwiches

I have just been to my daughter's school as her class ran a "restaurant", serving us for lunch. I got two pieces of wholemeal bread with fake ham, fake cheese, one slice of tomato and a scrap of lettuce slapped together. Miss S was extremely proud of herself. I could not say "no" to her in front of her classmates so I ate it and told her that it was the best sandwich ever. However my gut, which doesn't like a lot of gluten, is churning wildly now with discomfort. They weren't wrong when it was said that parenting can cause you a lot of pain. I just didn't expect it like this!
I got in a nice long walk this morning and did Kick Punch and Crunch - had to do the high intensity cardio section twice to keep my HR up. I will have to see what P90x (Kenpo X ) does to it. I really love Cathe's drills in this one though. Eating, apart from my sandwich and blueberry muffin for "dessert" has been pretty spot on. Now I am off for afternoon tea with one of Sarah's classmates. I work for her DH in the pharmacy. Everyone knows everyone else here - I definitely worry about inbreeding...

Quickie Update

Workout this morning: RPM 33 and Cathe's Supersets - Upper Body Premix 45 mins. I think Cathe's Bicep workout this morning nearly made me cry. It's been a long time since I've done this workout and I suffered. I enjoyed RPM and am going to focus this month on getting my CV fitness up in preparation for those RPM classes I'll be teaching when I get home.

I've just been trying to draw up a rough timeline as how to time the move best. The sooner the better I say, but poor DH is up to his neck in work and a few weeks extra here may be sanity saving for him, so we will work it out.

New Month!

Got stuck into Cathe's Butts and Guts this morning and I am feeling some rather pleasant DOMS in my glute medius area. Much much harder second time around know that I know what's coming. Deadlifts and low lunges were killer, but I still enjoyed it.

I am formulating a plan - to get home efficiently and to remove a lot of clutter. I think that getting rid of excess stuff is a huge relief and I've been made more aware of clutter since my grandmother passed away about fifteen years ago. She was not a hoarder by any means, but it was hard knowing what to do with a lot of her stuff. Therefore I have decided that a charity may benefit more from the stuff I am not using.
I chose this pic of Mary Elizabeth Lado to remind me that 1) working my lazy glutes is a good thing and 2) getting my vastus medialis to fire more will help my knee pain. She has great glutes and quads! I love the suit my mate Berns has designed for her - she looks amazing - like a figure athlete but not humunguous as some of the American competitors seem to be going these days.

Try and stop me

Workout today: Push Pull Upper Body x 3 sets + run-walk cycles 30 mins. Really pushed it :) and pulled it for that matter!
DH got approval from his company for the move back home. I am so relieved! It means we can all move together. Now I just have to get my butt into action and do it.

I've decided I'm going to get all business like for April. I want to ramp up the intensity and focus in both training and eating well. Not that I've been dreadful or anything, but I've missed having a goal to focus on. I want to be nice and fit when I return to Brisbane so that my first few weeks of teaching RPM won't kill me :)

Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

I have been having a real battle with my "Inner Gollum" this week - that's my inner voice that sometimes rises to the surface to tell me that it is OK to stuff my face full of sugar and that it doesn't matter anymore because I'm not competing! I have to rein him in and tell him it's not OK and that because I'm not competing it matters even more. Then TOM arrived explaining the feelings I have had over the past few days. I wrote the date on the calendar and made a note in my diary that around PMS time, to purposely eat more to avoid getting the inexplicable cravings. It is amazing how even when we are saying nothing we have this internal dialogue that buzzes at us all the time. A client and good friend of mine calls her inner voice "The Fat Girl" and regularly updates us all on how she sends the b*tch packing! It sounds funny, but I think it's really effective.

Workout today involved Cathe's Terminator - Imax Extreme - the Terminator Workout contains three "eat your Weetbix" workouts - today's was cardio interspersed with interval blasts and plyo jumps. Then I followed up with 30 minutes of swimming - mixed strokes - I have discovered in my old age a talent for breaststroke I never knew I had!

I have really been enjoying the World Swimming Champs this week - Michael Phelps has been nothing short of amazing - as well as Frenchwoman Laure Manadou who "sprints" with a two beat kick. I keep studying them in the water and looking at their body placement and think about how they are so fast and efficient (vs how slow and inefficient I am in comparison).

Now it's back to "Thai Harder"

Feeling much better today. It's amazing how watching "Desperate Housewives" and having a decent kip diminish a bad mood. Today I got up early and went for about an hour walk and listened to an Alwyn Cosgrove podcast which was quite interesting. Basically Alwyn stated you get the biggest financial return from being well educated in your field and having the passion to keep raising the bar higher and higher... it all boils down to the old adage "do what you love and the money will follow".

This morning's harder workout consisted of Imax Extreme which is from Cathe's DVD "The Terminator". I managed to juggle plyo jumps with making sure Miss G (who has a sore throat) was kept happy. As a mother, you are always multi tasking! I am really nice and sore from Push Pull yesterday!

Well, "Fuk mi" again!

Whew, what a couple of days!
I had a First Aid course scheduled on the weekend. I meticulously packed my pink cooler bag only to find out when I had arrived that the course had been cancelled.
Then today I locked myself out of the house and I have been stranded for the last five hours whilst DH retrieved the keys from work. If I was in Brisbane I could have done an excellent stint of window shopping, but here in Woop Woop, the most entertaining thing I could do was walk up and down the 50 m or so of shops which make up the bustling city centre, not. Aggh. I feel peeved at DH because he keeps flip flopping on the job issue and I resent the only day I don't have the kids being taken up with this drama.
I did get to do Push Pull, Upper Body workout (x3 sets) and the two hour Spinerval workout today. I loved it, especially when I sync it up with the music from my IPOD.
Ah well, I'm going to have a nice bowl of pumpkin soup and try and forget about the day. Tomorrow is a new one and thank goodness there are such things as tomorrows for they give us hope.

Just another day of paddling.

Sometimes those days that aren't particularly exciting are the most challenging to any good weight maintainer. Today I have been dealing with feelings of uncertainty now that DH is back ...what next? We think we know what should be happening but putting those plans into action is something else all together. Even though our goal is to move back to Brisvegas we are open to Melbourne or Perth or an overseas posting as well. Plus I have been feeling extremely bored in Woop Woop all day. What does this mean to me in "maintenance" - learning to deal with the feelings rather than stuffing down them down with a visit to the fridge! It's not easy with the fridge in full sight all day, but I deal with it by trying to keep busy and eating a wide variety of foods, especially those that take a long time to chew. Humans have an innate need to chew which is why seeing a protein shake on my menu is rather rare - I'd rather have a good munch than drink down all my calories in one fell swoop.

Anyway back to feelings - they often determine our response to events that impact on us. I am learning that it is regulating these feelings and keeping my emotions in check that keeps me on the straight and narrow. Not that I avoid feeling things, I just try and keep it all in perspective.

I went for an hour long walk this morning and had a low intensity day. Tomorrow I am going to attempt a two (yes, you heard right!) hour aerobic base building session on the bike. I'm looking forward to this, plus a nice long stretch afterwards.

He's back!

DH is back home safe and sound. I can't believe it has been a month since we last saw each other. Poor fella is having a sleep right now as his body is telling him it's time to go to bed (South Africa is eight hours behind the Eastern States of Australia) - it is lovely to see him again.

Workout this morning was Cathe's Cardio Fusion "Mix and Max" Premix which clocked in at 80 mins. I don't know if it's the workout or DH being home, but I have been absolutely starving today. I've wolfed down two slices of bread in addition to my usuals - weird in that I'm really not all that keen on bread. Maybe it's avoidance eating because what I think I am craving is chocolate. Luckily there is some Mr Cadbury's in the fridge to help me out!

Feeling the Cathe love!

I'm officially on a Cathe bender at the moment. Today I pulled out "Kick, Punch and Crunch" and really enjoyed it, after getting off to a slow start. I had only done this one once before a few years back and couldn't remember any part of it, so it was like having a brand new DVD all over again. I followed this up with a 25 min swim (1200m) and "New Rules of Lifting" Break In Workout A.

I received my "Chicken or Chocolate" TShirt from Lia today and also in my parcel was the National Titles DVDs and (the best part!) a "Koko Black" hot chocolate at home pack. If I have the choice of "chicken or chocolate" when I have a Koko Black option, guess what wins? I didn't want to post pics of my mug two days in a row, but will be modelling the T-shirt later this week!
I was also lucky enough to have a great chat to Lia on the phone today as well.

I have officially decided that I am not going to compete this year. Really I am having fun with all sorts of other stuff right now and as I mentioned earlier, feel that I'm headed more down the coaching and preparation path anyway. Plus it is great to be fit and healthy just for the heck of it ;) I haven't actually spent much time in "maintenance mode" and learning to keep good balance and perspective has been my challenge so far in 2007. I'm getting there though!

Monday, March 19, 2007

They're leaving the building!

Yup that's the 1.5 kg I keep playing with post holidays. I've finally decided that I've had enough and it's now war :) Really I am thankful that with no gym or running to speak of it's not more. Enough said!
I've tried to 'outdo' sweaty Rae post cardio, but as you can see from the picture above, I don't even come close to the shade of pink Miss Rae is! However if this picture makes you spill your coffee down your front in horror, then it's probably done it's job! I took this after doing RPM 30 in the Bolthole. My HR got up to 163 during Tracks 5 and 7 and I am noticing that it is really starting to drop during my 'recoveries', so the emphasis on cardio has definitely paid dividends fitness wise. I then went to the ROR and did Alwyn Cosgrove's New Rules of Lifting, Break In Program B (phew, that's a mouthful). "Break In" took 15-20 minutes - gotta love a strength training program like that! It was pretty solid work though.
OK, off to prep lunch and do the chores :)

I am so proud of myself

I am so proud of myself because I have worked out (and almost prepped!) an entire week of meals and workouts. Anyone who knows me well tends to also know that I fly by the seat of my pants with this sort of thing and it actually makes me feel uncomfortable. I feel really good about organizing the week ahead and I'm hoping that it cuts down on that dreaded anxiety of "what the hell is for dinner?" I was feeling despondent last night that I wasn't organized enough and I made a small list to get through today. I'm pleased to say that I've nearly achieved all of it! I guess the secret is in not writing a huge list and being pleased with small accomplishments.

Workout wise, I'm going to do the "Break In" program of the "New Rules of Lifting". I am hoping that the Room of Requirement will be open as the building is for sale and I'm hoping to be able to use it this week. If not, I am sure that I can substitute my exercises around and find a happy medium. I'm going to rest Bodymax 2 this week and try some other Cathe's again.

No exercise today as Miss G is still a bit under the weather. I'm looking forward to tomorrow though!

Flipping the Universe

"You make plans and God laughs"........
This is a theme that seems to have resonated through our married life, yet DH and I are talking about trying to establish a rough long term plan. That being, how we are charting our course in life and where we want to go, do and be in the next few years. I am beginning to become painfully aware of planning a solid financial future and if we want to be able to do things later on we need to look at where we are going now. I know, spoken like a true "j" , but I really like to have some sort of rough plan happening whether it be in my fitness life or in my home life etc etc. I am lucky that the storms DH and I have weathered lately have brought us closer together - we tend to thrash things out until they can be thrashed no more.
With the planning aspect exercise wise, I generally have a long term goal that is more global in nature and usually go week by week towards it. Miss G is still unwell, so I have had 2 unplanned rest days in a row, which means I am raring to go now. I'm thinking of two very solid strength training sessions, 3 tough cardio sessions and 3 moderate cardio sessions.
Anyway, rather than stare at a blank piece of paper with "plans" written on it, I'd better go make some of them a reality.

Fitting it in!

This morning I did most of Cathe's Cardio Fusion DVD before Miss G's swimming lesson. Miss G has been "out of sorts" all day. We invited her little friend around for a play - Miss G was rather excited, but she showed that she was truly not 100% when she organized toys for her little mate and jumped into bed and fell asleep. So I had to pop her little friend home whilst she was asleep. Luckily she only lives about 4 doors away from us and I was able to drop her off and come back home relatively quickly. I am just relieved that she didn't wake up!

Sometimes it is hard to juggle in time for fitness with motherhood, but staying relatively fit makes me a much happier mother, so it is worth the effort. I am definitely fitter, faster and stronger since I had both children - I don't know why this is, but maybe that we just have to have this desire to put in our best and then some or whether there is a physiological component to it as well. I am definitely more body aware, but that is probably due to my wacky hip joints - I'm always trying to push the fine line, but know where my limits are with my joints.

What I ate today (just for fun)

Breakfast: oats, skim milk, whey protein (I like cookies and cream flavour!)
Snack/post workout: 1 baked potato, yoghurt, berries, protein powder (in shake or mixed with yoghurt)
Lunch: grilled chicken breast with many veggies on baby spinach with raspberry vinegar and pecans, orange slices
Snack: cottage cheese and vegetables on rice cake, 2 cups pumpkin soup (homemade :) ), 2 teaspoons peanut butter.
Dinner: kangaroo chilli with beans, 1/2 potato, 2 cups broccoli, 1 cup carrots, fish oil
Snack: cottage cheese and veggies on rice cakes, 1 cup of tea

Depending on the workout/hunger level I can add in another meal if I feel like it! It is amazing how much food you can pack away on the Leanness Lifestyle. A good friend of mine from Bris, Anne, who came to the Nationals with me, likens our culinary adventures to "hoovering", especially when we are both hungry :)

Girl Got it Done!

Workout this morning: Spinervals Core Conditioning and "afterburn" style circuit focusing on chest and shoulders in the Room of Requirement. After deciding to part company with the X, I am going to spend four weeks or so on volume training and trying to condition my joints/tendons a little more before moving on to some heavier lifting. I'd really like to pack some more muscle on the upper body. I really enjoyed my circuit this morning moving from upper body moves to lower body cardio during the rest periods. I never normally train like this and it was a bit of fun.

I cannot believe that hubs will be home next week. The time has flown!

Scrambled eggs and connections

This morning I did Cathe's Bodymax 2 premix called "Scrambled Eggs" which was mainly cardio with some extra leg drills thrown in. It certainly didn't disappoint - my HR stats were very impressive - 714 kcal burnt, max HR 161, average 143. I don't tend to take much notice of the stats but they are very fun to read post workout! I am planning another visit to the Room of Requirement tomorrow after I do some Yoga and RPM/Spinervals. I'm thinking of taking out the Spinervals Core Conditioning tape for a nice (!) change.

Now where was I in regards to connections? Yes, I have an ITB that is playing up which is probably related to my SIJ problems. I gave it a stretch on my foam roller this morning. Yipes, that bit! I'm actually looking forward to doing some Yoga tomorrow morning.

I'm going to make some more kangaroo lasagna tonight and I am going to give kangaroo chili con carne a test run. The girls love chili and so do I. This should work out to be uber lean and will go down a treat with a small side of rice and some steamed veggies. I was lucky that the veggie truck had hit the local store today and I bought up big :)

I learnt that yesterday's temps reached 42 degrees C. No wonder I have been feeling so hot :)

I'm on my way from misery to happiness today..

I'm about to reveal my worst kept secret - I am officially going home! I know I have alluded to this in previous postings, but I now have a concrete aim to be back home by the Easter holidays, whether DH is ready or not. We are both happy with this decision - we both reckon that life is too short to be totally miserable, which is what I have been wrestling with, especially since December. I have been having one hell of a tussle with the "Black Dog" these past few months, which really impacted on my decision to come back. Through trying to remain positive and staying committed to healthy exercise/eating think that I am now starting to gain enough strength to send him packing with his tail between his legs.

I did RPM 29 this morning - I had forgotten what a good release this one is and then I went down to the Room of Requirement and punched out a back and bicep workout. I am starting to tire of the X, though I'm not giving it away completely. It was a nice change to get out of the house actually. It is blistering hot here today - 37 degrees at 8am! Yuck!

Best be off to pay a few bills. Gosh life can be an expensive business!

All about children?

In case you have ever wondered what my wonderful genetics have produced, check out Miss G's portrait as seen through the eyes of Miss S.. Hips may be an issue later on for this chick!
I went and had morning tea this morning with two lovely ladies who have small children (smaller than mine). One was worried about sending her child to kindy and that she wanted her at home a little longer. I find these conversations distinctly uncomfortable as I have always been "bring on Kindy as fast as possible!" So I smiled politely, whilst thinking, "are you mad?" This conversation always seems to happen when said child is confident and bright as a button and obviously ready for some more interaction. In fact, I find most conversation about babies, toddlers and children decidedly dull and I was relieved to make my exit.
I am finding that as my daughters are getting older they are getting more interesting and are really complex little people with distinctly different personalities and very loving in their own ways. The other day Miss S was applying some sunscreen to my back. I told her that she had magic hands and should think of becoming a physio when she grows up. Last night she informed me that she thought I was right and could she practice being a "physio" on me. I laid out on the floor like a sprawled out spider and both girls played "physios" on me for an hour! Did I mention that I love my girls :) ?
This morning I cracked open RPM 34 again - nice workout! I was a drenched ball of sweat by the end of it and I will get a swim in when the girls have lessons this afternoon. Some days I get really discouraged by the lack of time and facilities to train, but I know that when I'm back home at Fitness First, a broken down treadmill every now and again won't perturb me in the least.

No time for down time!

Today I was back in the saddle with P90X Chest, Shoulders and Triceps. This is no easy workout and involves plyo clap push ups and one armed push ups (mine are really wimpy still!) I followed it up with Cathe's Cardio Fusion and a 20 minute swim. I loved Cardio Fusion and it really got my heart rate up there this morning!

Eating has been great today and I'm going to give the pecan crusted salmon another run tonight. Salmon is hard to come by in Woop Woop and I bought 300g frozen, enough for two meals. Seeing DH is away, I have it all to myself. I'm trying to decide whether to have my regular weekly splurge icecream tonight whilst I watch "Lost". Apparently this episode is meant to be fairly good tonight. I watched "Heroes" last night - it's pretty bent but I like it :)

Speaking of DH, he has phoned quite regularly which is really nice. His course sounds interesting - all about people management, career development and the like. Off to be a winner and cook dinner (sorry that was weak :) )

Encouragement for Kek

Here is my dinner from tonight (yes, it's already been eaten!) Pecan crusted salmon, Berardi style.
150g salmon
10g pecan nuts crushed and pressed on top of salmon and seared on grill.
Serve with veggies of your choice
I'm hoping that my first foray into Berardi cooking means that Kek will post a pic of her protein poo-balls!

Life..as usual!

Not much doing today. Subbed Body Combat 29 for Kenpo X -I think Les Mills have gone a little soft on us with the later Combat releases. I need more endorphins!

Still playing "Chase the Ant" with the vacuum cleaner. After feeling very chuffed that I had cleaned the house from stem to stern and made it very ant unfriendly, I was dismayed to see a black stream of them this morning, ala the Urukai in the second Lord of the Rings movie as they made their way to Helm's Deep.

Things are moving very slowly here without DH. I'm about ready to tear my hair out!

Maxing it out!

Today I woke up feeling less of a fat bloated bovine and decided it was time to get back on the "X". So, it was Legs and Back this morning, with a real focus on technique. I didn't achieve as many pull ups as I did in Week 3, but I'm not too worried about that - quality over quantity in this case wins every time.

I am having fun playing with my new HR monitor and decided to test it out doing a 60minute cardio premix of Bodymax 2. Let me say there is "doing Cathe" and "really doing Cathe". Shall we say that the HR monitor was a really great way of getting me to work that much harder. The thought of devoting an hour to exercise and not getting my heart rate up there is horrifying to me, so I really caned it! I was cactus by the end of it. For those who are not familiar with Cathe, imagine Bodystep x 2 - the intensity doesn't drop in this one, but rather increases right to the end where you finish yourself off with air plyo jacks and 180 degree power squats! My heart rate stats looked like this: average HR 143, Max HR (during workout) 164bpm 493kcal torched!

I woke up to rain this morning, which is rare for Woop Woop and was hoping that would make a dent in my ant problem. No luck there unfortunately. I am having fun running around and chasing them with my vacuum cleaner - hey it could be a new sport!

I think I need to go have my weekly fix of Desperate Housewives....

Fat Bloated Cow Syndrome

Love this pic, I'm a Fat Bloated Cow who has "Lost" the plot! Yes indeedy, TOM is giving me a thorough drubbing! At least I'm not a PMSing Fat Bloated Cow - you gotta look on the bright side, right? I hope you can see the pic, I've tried publishing this three times with no luck.

I've just come back from a weekend at the beach with the girls. It was a good way to pass the weekend, rather than having to climb the walls with boredom in Woop Woop. However I think the location is where most mining families tend to go to get away from it all because I spent the entire weekend running into people I've been trying to get away from! It's nothing personal, it's just my INFJ tendency to want some privacy to recharge the old batteries. Speaking of MBTI types, I checked out the link in the comments area of Jodie's journal - about the INFJ type and somehow managed to find myself reading about INFJ vs INFP. It was really illuminating because I've often wondered if I am an INFP, but the more I read on the more obvious it is that I am definitely an INFJ type. I'd like to delve into this more at some stage because I believe it could really help me with my future projects.

We are having a second round of summer weather here. It was over 30degrees C before 8am this morning and the Woop Woop ants are out in full force. I have spent the morning mopping the floor and trying to work out why all of a sudden, ants want to invade my house. Despite not feeling like a workout, I pulled out RPM 32 and gave myself a thorough pasting and I feel much better already!

Feeling Seedy

I'm having a day of feeling "under the weather". I cannot put it down to anything except my slight change in food intake. I struggled through Back and Biceps this morning and have been a cranky, pmsing cow all day... arrgh.

I can see a post of this nature aint going to earn me many hits..hee,he.
